The biggest part of your own research is to make sure it is reasonably methodical.
I would llike to start as if you are a newbie to the game. You have to determine what it is that you want to reseach. Would it only be the real basic stuff in terms who are all the members of the family or do you want to cast the net a bit wider. By that I mean that you also want family ionformation regarding places stayed at, schhols attended, jobs obtained and what type of work the family member was doing. Also sporting achievements and the like.
I am raelly going to concern myself more with the former. The latter is really through personal contact with the family and obtaining their consent to share the info.
If you want to go to the "easier" route of only the names and basic detail then the first is to get paper and jot down the information that you have.Information that you genearlly need is:.
So you continue for 5 generations - that is what is caled a "Pedigree Chart" - 31 names in total.
You can go back further using the manual method, but it really gets to be very onerous. The suggestion is that you should now get a "Computer based recording programme".
This would now be your first capital outlay for a computer, if you don't already have one.
On the basis that you have your recording set up it is now to get the family info further back into history and that would really mean that you should contact a local Genealogical Association for assistance or contact an organisation and work from there
The final must is to conduct research on the computer by visiting genealogical web sites and read their info carefully and work from there forward.
I receive on average one e-mail per month from people who ask me how they should conduct their own family research.
